About this Blog
During the semester, I shall post course material and students will comment on it. Students are also free to comment on any aspect of American politics, either current or historical. There are only two major limitations: no coarse language, and no derogatory comments about people at the Claremont Colleges. This blog is on the open Internet, so post nothing that you would not want a potential employer to see. Syllabus: http://gov20h.blogspot.com/2023/08/draft-introduction-to-american-politics.html

Political Realism v. Morality
In class we discussed the factors that could contribute to the 2020 Election, one of the big ones being the Economy. In the US government, the goal is to find an equilibrium between realism and morality. A political realist will recognize the necessity to do what it takes to make things right. For example, Democrats may wish for an unsuccessful economy before the 2020 elections so Trump's prospects of reelections look dimmer. Despite a strong economy benefiting constituents, Democrats would rather have the economy suffer than loose the Presidency. While it may not be morally right to hope the economy fails, Democrats justify it by claiming their party could do better in the Executive. The Dems are hoping for a negative, so eventually they can do more good if they win back the Presidency. A political realist would say the Dems are doing what is necessary for their party, so they can help the American people the best they can.
