About this Blog

During the semester, I shall post course material and students will comment on it. Students are also free to comment on any aspect of American politics, either current or historical. There are only two major limitations: no coarse language, and no derogatory comments about people at the Claremont Colleges. This blog is on the open Internet, so post nothing that you would not want a potential employer to see. Syllabus: http://gov20h.blogspot.com/2023/08/draft-introduction-to-american-politics.html

CA-45 Flips the Seat

Last week, we watched some ads on the House race in CA-45, which is based in Orange County. On the day of the election, the Republican incumbent, Mimi Walters, was ahead by 3% with over 5000 votes of margin. However, after mail in ballots started adding to the totals, the Democratic challenger Katie Porter has pulled ahead slightly with a margin of only 300 votes. The results of the election will likely remain unclear for a while longer. However, I am very surprised that a district that has been represented by a republican ever since its formation and is generally considered very conservative is experiencing a race this close. What is making longtime conservatives turn their back on their party?
