About this Blog

During the semester, I shall post course material and students will comment on it. Students are also free to comment on any aspect of American politics, either current or historical. There are only two major limitations: no coarse language, and no derogatory comments about people at the Claremont Colleges. This blog is on the open Internet, so post nothing that you would not want a potential employer to see. Syllabus: http://gov20h.blogspot.com/2023/08/draft-introduction-to-american-politics.html

Congressional Orientation

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, congresswoman-elect for New York's 14th district, has been candid about her journey to Congress, and has shared much of it through social media platforms, such as Twitter and Instagram. On Monday, she featured pictures and short videos from the first day of "freshman orientation" for all newly-elected members of Congress on her Instagram story. The day seemed to include some panel presentations, and some possible down time with Congresswomen-elect Ayanna Pressley, Ilhan Omar, and Rashida Tlaib. Ocasio-Cortez attended a demonstration of environmental activists with Tlaib later that day.

Ocasio-Cortez has also gained attention for her decision to remain in New York city until she is able to afford DC rent on a congresswoman's salary. Some have praised her candor, while others have lambasted her for it.
She was also featured prominently on the most recent cover of The New Yorker, along with Omar and other newly-elected members of Congress. The magazine titled the feature, "The New Congress".
