About this Blog

During the semester, I shall post course material and students will comment on it. Students are also free to comment on any aspect of American politics, either current or historical. There are only two major limitations: no coarse language, and no derogatory comments about people at the Claremont Colleges. This blog is on the open Internet, so post nothing that you would not want a potential employer to see. Syllabus: http://gov20h.blogspot.com/2023/08/draft-introduction-to-american-politics.html

Phi Beta Kappa

Welcome to Phi Beta Kappa!

Induction ceremony: Thursday, May 12th, at 5:00pm at the Athenaeum.  Ath attire.

Inductees may invite up to three people to join them for dinner at the Ath at no charge. After everyone has had a chance to register for the ceremony and invite three guests, the Office of Events can consider requests for additional guests if space is available. Invitations for dinner and the induction ceremony will go out on March 28th and registration for that event will close on April 15th.

A unique feature of the ceremony consists of the "eulogies," in which I introduce each member and say nice things about you.  Here is the information that I need:
  • Full name
  • A PHONETIC pronunciation of your name, if not obvious.
  • Hometown
  • Your major
  • Significant activities: study abroad, internship, sports, campus involvement, along with any insights or observations.
  • Very brief description of your senior thesis in terms that a non-major could understand.
  • Any additional thoughts that you want to share.
  • Plans for the future.  If you are going to graduate school in the fall of 2022, please make sure to mention it.  Phi Beta Kappa in Southern California might have a (very) small scholarship available for one student in each chapter.  (We are still awaiting their plans)

Also please include a photo (jpg format) that we could show during your eulogy.  It would be great if the photo showed you in some activity or setting that is meaningful to you.

To give you a sense of the amount and kind of information I need, here is a slightly-fictionalized eulogy:

Hannah Elizabeth Milhous [MILL-house], from Whittier, California, majored in government and psychology. She took part in our Washington Semester Program, where she interned for Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Wiretapping.  She studied in Edinburgh, Scotland for a semester, where she developed a taste for haggis pizza. On campus, she was a research assistant for the Kravis Leadership Institute and captained the Women's Quaker Rifle Team. For her thesis, she studied the psychology of paranoid political leaders.  It won the award for best thesis in psychology.  Next year, she will work for Deloitte in its Antarctica office. In the longer run, she plans on becoming either a professor or head of a Mafia family.  She says:  “I would like to thank Richard, my pet tarantula, for emotionally supporting me during my time at CMC.
