About this Blog

During the semester, I shall post course material and students will comment on it. Students are also free to comment on any aspect of American politics, either current or historical. There are only two major limitations: no coarse language, and no derogatory comments about people at the Claremont Colleges. This blog is on the open Internet, so post nothing that you would not want a potential employer to see. Syllabus: http://gov20h.blogspot.com/2023/08/draft-introduction-to-american-politics.html

Colbert Report Anonymous Shell Corporation 501(c)(4)

This clip is a great follow up to the clip we saw in class today about Stephen Colbert setting up his Super PAC. In this clip, Colbert’s lawyer advises him that sometimes corporations might not want their name associated with a political contribution. His lawyer then helps him set up a 501(c)(4) Delaware corporation that does nor have to disclose its funders. This is also known as dark money.

At the end of the clip, Colbert’s lawyer admits the difficulty in discerning the different between this process and money laundering. What are your thoughts? Should this be a legal process?
