About this Blog

During the semester, I shall post course material and students will comment on it. Students are also free to comment on any aspect of American politics, either current or historical. There are only two major limitations: no coarse language, and no derogatory comments about people at the Claremont Colleges. This blog is on the open Internet, so post nothing that you would not want a potential employer to see. Syllabus: http://gov20h.blogspot.com/2023/08/draft-introduction-to-american-politics.html

Greta Thunberg v. Donald Trump

It would seem that the President simply cannot let any slight go unanswered. 16-year-old Greta Thunberg, who has been speaking to the UN regarding her views on climate change, has become the most recent object of his mockery. On Monday, the President sarcastically tweeted, "She seems like a very happy girl looking forward to a bright and wonderful future. So nice to see!"

Rather than responding directly to his tweet, Thunberg simply changed her Twitter bio to: "A very happy girl looking forward to a bright and wonderful future."

An article from Business Insider about the back-and-forth

The incident comes just as Fox News was forced to issue an apology regarding guest Michael Knowles, who called Thunberg a "mentally ill Swedish child." The comment was widely seen as offensive given Thunberg's public diagnosis of Asperger's Syndrome.
