About this Blog

During the semester, I shall post course material and students will comment on it. Students are also free to comment on any aspect of American politics, either current or historical. There are only two major limitations: no coarse language, and no derogatory comments about people at the Claremont Colleges. This blog is on the open Internet, so post nothing that you would not want a potential employer to see. Syllabus: http://gov20h.blogspot.com/2023/08/draft-introduction-to-american-politics.html

US-Mexico Border Closed

The Trump Administration has long demonized the caravan of Central-Americans seeking asylum in the United States, and as of a few hours ago took the "precautionary" step of closing the San Ysidro crossing point. San Ysidro is located south of San Diego and is the world's busiest border crossing, with thousands passing through it daily. San Diego's Customs and Border Patrol division has stated both northbound and southbound crossings have been suspended until further notice.

The Trump Administration seems to have been in communication with the Mexican government, and claims that many asylum seekers will stay in Mexico. Around noon a group of individuals burst through a blockade of the Mexican guard in Tijuana, and at one point in the skirmish US Border Patrol launched tear gas at the crowd, which included children and infants. Trump has threatened a shutdown of the border, and has stated that no one entering "illegally" will be allowed to claim asylum in the United States.

The Mexican government has one week before the newly-elected Andrés Manuel López Obrador is sworn into the presidency. López Obrador denies claims that the Mexican government will keep the migrants in their country.

UPDATE: The border was reopened shortly after 6pm, after being closed since 11:30am. Tijuana police has arrested 39 individuals as of Sunday night.
