This is pretty shocking. After losing the support of the hardline 'House Freedom Caucus,' Kevin McCarthy has dropped out of the race for speaker. Without the Freedom Caucus, McCarthy still would have easily won the majority of House Republican votes, but would have faced a challenge getting a majority on the House floor. This is on the whole seems to be a very bad situation for the Republicans, as they are left without an obvious candidate who can unite the establishment and far right wing of the party. Since the two candidates running against McCarthy are unlikely to achieve majority support, someone else will have to step in, or Boehner will not be able to resign.
This could have far reaching consequences for the 2016 presidential and congressional elections. Not only will it fuel divisions in the fractured presidential field, but it may also undermine voter confidence in the GOP's ability to govern.

About this Blog
During the semester, I shall post course material and students will comment on it. Students are also free to comment on any aspect of American politics, either current or historical. There are only two major limitations: no coarse language, and no derogatory comments about people at the Claremont Colleges. This blog is on the open Internet, so post nothing that you would not want a potential employer to see. Syllabus: http://gov20h.blogspot.com/2023/08/draft-introduction-to-american-politics.html
