About this Blog

During the semester, I shall post course material and students will comment on it. Students are also free to comment on any aspect of American politics, either current or historical. There are only two major limitations: no coarse language, and no derogatory comments about people at the Claremont Colleges. This blog is on the open Internet, so post nothing that you would not want a potential employer to see. Syllabus: http://gov20h.blogspot.com/2023/08/draft-introduction-to-american-politics.html

American Civic Culture

Who was Tocqueville?

He wrote: "The religious atmosphere of the country was the first thing that struck me on arrival in the United States." (p. 295 of Lawrence-Mayer ed.) See relevant data.

In June 2006, Barack Obama gave an important speech on religion in politics. See prepared text here.

He has a very different tone in this speech than his more recent speeches as President. He seems to have more of a drawl, I'm reminded of Jesse Jackson Jr. He's probably had a lot of work done on his accent since his first campaign.
