About this Blog

During the semester, I shall post course material and students will comment on it. Students are also free to comment on any aspect of American politics, either current or historical. There are only two major limitations: no coarse language, and no derogatory comments about people at the Claremont Colleges. This blog is on the open Internet, so post nothing that you would not want a potential employer to see. Syllabus: http://gov20h.blogspot.com/2023/08/draft-introduction-to-american-politics.html

US News (about politics, not college rankings).

http://www.cnn.com/2011/POLITICS/09/13/gop-debate.analysts/
Who do you think came out on top? Is Perry really the frontrunner? Is Social Security really a ponzi scheme?

...And just in case anyone did not read about the recent college rankings...

I would say Perry is the frontrunner, based on Texas' economy and his ability to dish out red meat. I don't think he'll win because as Romney said he was delt "four aces" and his actual texas policies such as a crony capitalist investment bank (http://www.nationalreview.com/agenda/274677/charles-dameron-rick-perrys-texas-emerging-technology-fund-reihan-salam)and controversial vacinnation plan will not win him many new followers.

On Social Security being a Ponzi Scheme (see links below). Most people take out more from social security than they get in their lifetimes (cant find link to source but true fact). This was historically fixed by having many people pay for each retired person but the current and projected lower worker to old person ratio makes it such that social security is loosing money even today (http://www.nytimes.com/2010/03/25/business/economy/25social.html) and the trust fund is a budgetary fiction. Its a "Ponzi scheme" that will not go belly up for some years so until then it helps but after that it will hurt and thus it needs to be reformed.
