About this Blog

During the semester, I shall post course material and students will comment on it. Students are also free to comment on any aspect of American politics, either current or historical. There are only two major limitations: no coarse language, and no derogatory comments about people at the Claremont Colleges. This blog is on the open Internet, so post nothing that you would not want a potential employer to see. Syllabus: http://gov20h.blogspot.com/2023/08/draft-introduction-to-american-politics.html

PURPLE AMERICA INITIATIVE

  From Eman:

Hey everyone!

A couple years ago I started a nonprofit called the Purple America Initiative (www.purpleamericainitiative.org). The organization works to connect students from across the country to have conversations about politics, focused on building productive understanding across political and geographic divides. As the name suggests, our goal is especially to get more conservative and liberal students talking to others outside of their respective “bubbles.” Every month we pick a topic of discussion, our leadership team develops a basic fact sheet and facilitation questions on that topic, and we use these materials to facilitate Zoom discussion groups of about 15-20 students. Some people end up starting Purple America chapters at their schools or in their communities to continue the conversation locally. That is a brief overview, but there is a lot more information available on our website if you are interested!

In the next couple of months, leading up to the election, we are planning some interesting projects and starting our social media/traditional media outreach campaigns. We have also been thinking about launching a college-level program in 2021. If you are interested in the current project work or in joining our new college leadership team, please reach out – I would love to chat!
