About this Blog

During the semester, I shall post course material and students will comment on it. Students are also free to comment on any aspect of American politics, either current or historical. There are only two major limitations: no coarse language, and no derogatory comments about people at the Claremont Colleges. This blog is on the open Internet, so post nothing that you would not want a potential employer to see. Syllabus: http://gov20h.blogspot.com/2023/08/draft-introduction-to-american-politics.html

Federal Criminal Laws & Dealing with the Police

The reading from Tocqueville this week made me remember an article and video I had watched a few weeks ago about the amount of federal criminal laws. Tocqueville alluded to this reality when he discussed the number of laws already made by states in New England and the frequent passage of new laws due to the quickly changing legislature.

This article briefly discusses how there is an uncountable number of federal criminal laws.

The Wall Street Journal, "Many Failed Efforts to Count Nation's Federal Criminal Laws" by Gary Fields and John R. Emshwiller

This video of a professor from a Virginia Law School builds on this reality and includes a police officer's perspective - and some good advice about dealing with the police. It's long, but I'd recommend skipping through it if you have the time. The police officer's lecture is especially interesting... and for me at least, frightening.
