About this Blog

During the semester, I shall post course material and students will comment on it. Students are also free to comment on any aspect of American politics, either current or historical. There are only two major limitations: no coarse language, and no derogatory comments about people at the Claremont Colleges. This blog is on the open Internet, so post nothing that you would not want a potential employer to see. Syllabus: http://gov20h.blogspot.com/2023/08/draft-introduction-to-american-politics.html

Tocqueville on the Lack of Press Power

On page 187, Tocqueville states "In such ages, people are not so ready to die for their opinions, but they do not change them...When opinions are in doubt, men end by clinging only to instincts and material interests, which by nature are more visible, tangible, and permanent then opinion.
This is interesting when looked at in the context of Trump's followers. By discrediting the media, he is creating a bubble for himself in which his followers will stay constant in their opinions. If there was more trust in the media, would governing officials be more accountable for their actions?
Also, a funny Ivanka Trump fake Tocqueville quote below.
