About this Blog

During the semester, I shall post course material and students will comment on it. Students are also free to comment on any aspect of American politics, either current or historical. There are only two major limitations: no coarse language, and no derogatory comments about people at the Claremont Colleges. This blog is on the open Internet, so post nothing that you would not want a potential employer to see. Syllabus: http://gov20h.blogspot.com/2023/08/draft-introduction-to-american-politics.html

Is Impeachment an "Overturning" of an Election, or Simply a Check on the Executive?

Opinion: Impeachment Does Not 'Overturn' an Election

In class the other day, there was mention of the idea of impeachment overturning election results. I found this article intriguing as a counterpoint that essentially argues that there would be no significant shift in power or politics if Trump were to be impeached and even removed from office. Impeachment, this writer argues, is instead important as a means of a legislative check on presidential power written into the Constitution. This article could also be a useful resource in counteracting possible arguments that the process is illegitimate due solely to the idea that the election would be 'overturned.'
