About this Blog

During the semester, I shall post course material and students will comment on it. Students are also free to comment on any aspect of American politics, either current or historical. There are only two major limitations: no coarse language, and no derogatory comments about people at the Claremont Colleges. This blog is on the open Internet, so post nothing that you would not want a potential employer to see. Syllabus: http://gov20h.blogspot.com/2023/08/draft-introduction-to-american-politics.html

Title VII SCOTUS Case--LGBTQ+ Protections

I know we have been talking a lot about Trump and impeachment, but I was reading about this case (and we got an e-mail from the school about it), so I think it is also important to acknowledge it in class. In the Trump era, I have noticed how much more infrequently we see non-presidential news, so I thought I would share this important story for not only LGBTQ+ Americans but our entire nation. This is also interesting as the article explains how this is the first LGBTQ+ case to be brought to the Supreme Court since Justice Kennedy, and therefore the outcome should be interesting as we do not know as clearly as we did before what the result will be. This case focuses on Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, questioning if it includes the LGBTQ+ community in its protections.
