About this Blog

During the semester, I shall post course material and students will comment on it. Students are also free to comment on any aspect of American politics, either current or historical. There are only two major limitations: no coarse language, and no derogatory comments about people at the Claremont Colleges. This blog is on the open Internet, so post nothing that you would not want a potential employer to see. Syllabus: http://gov20h.blogspot.com/2023/08/draft-introduction-to-american-politics.html

Is the bubble reinforced by a refusal to acknowledge its existence?

In this article, the author argues that a defining factor of the new upper class is its ignorance (willful or not) of how separate it really is from the rest of American society.  The vast majority of Americans responding to a 2016 class-identification Pew Research poll identified themselves as part of the "middle class". This included many Americans at the higher end of the income spectrum, some of whom made a yearly salary that was well into six figures. Some respondents said they did not consider someone to be rich until they made over half a million dollars a year. Is the elite class really so unaware of how elite they are? Does this feed their isolated culture?https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/in-theory/wp/2016/10/05/check-your-privilege-upper-middle-class/?utm_term=.12ea087f4cb7
