About this Blog

During the semester, I shall post course material and students will comment on it. Students are also free to comment on any aspect of American politics, either current or historical. There are only two major limitations: no coarse language, and no derogatory comments about people at the Claremont Colleges. This blog is on the open Internet, so post nothing that you would not want a potential employer to see. Syllabus: http://gov20h.blogspot.com/2023/08/draft-introduction-to-american-politics.html

Voter ID Law PASSED in North Carolina

Hey guys,

Last time in class, Professor Pitney briefly spoked about the newly proposed voter ID law in North Carolina and its racial implications. Today, the amendment passed by a 56 to 44 percent margin. This was one of six proposed amendments to the state constitution by the Republican-controlled General Assembly. This new law will now require all voters to present a photo ID if they want to vote.

Supporters of the law believe that it will prevent voter fraud and help protect people's identity.

Opponents of the law believe it is aimed at reducing the number of minority voters. They believe that it will disenfranchise African Americans and prevent them from excising their right to vote.

What is your view on this newly passed law?
