About this Blog
During the semester, I shall post course material and students will comment on it. Students are also free to comment on any aspect of American politics, either current or historical. There are only two major limitations: no coarse language, and no derogatory comments about people at the Claremont Colleges. This blog is on the open Internet, so post nothing that you would not want a potential employer to see. Syllabus: http://gov20h.blogspot.com/2023/08/draft-introduction-to-american-politics.html

How New is Newsom?
After the 2018, midterms, Gavin Newsom beat out Republican opponent John Cox, unsurprisingly. Newsom, a progressive democrat, might be considered more liberal than current governer Jerry Brown, who Mercury News called the "voice of moderation in Sacramento and the adult in the state capitol." Of course, Newsom is more progressive on topics like income inequality and gun control, but how much different will he be then Jerry Brown? Newsom has known Brown since early childhood, and grew up watching him run the state. Will the Newsom era bring radical change to California politics, or will we see a Brown-esque style of governance?
