About this Blog

During the semester, I shall post course material and students will comment on it. Students are also free to comment on any aspect of American politics, either current or historical. There are only two major limitations: no coarse language, and no derogatory comments about people at the Claremont Colleges. This blog is on the open Internet, so post nothing that you would not want a potential employer to see. Syllabus: http://gov20h.blogspot.com/2023/08/draft-introduction-to-american-politics.html

Harder declared winner over Denham

Yesterday, Democrat Josh Harder won in CA-10, a decidedly Republican district for the past eight years. Does this represent a change in politics in central California, or simply a reaction to Trump?

40% of California's electorate vote Republican, many of those from these Central Valley areas. Could this district vote red again in 2020? Or do demographic changes provide for a new purple District for the distant future.

In hindsight, Denham's own stances may have hindered his chances. He voted with Trump almost all the time, but on immigration he leaned more moderately. infuriating both moderate and Trump republicans. Does a moderate Republican stand a chance in Trump-era politics?
