About this Blog

During the semester, I shall post course material and students will comment on it. Students are also free to comment on any aspect of American politics, either current or historical. There are only two major limitations: no coarse language, and no derogatory comments about people at the Claremont Colleges. This blog is on the open Internet, so post nothing that you would not want a potential employer to see. Syllabus: http://gov20h.blogspot.com/2023/08/draft-introduction-to-american-politics.html

Trump Bans Bump Stocks!

Yesterday was the 1 year anniversary of the Las Vegas Shooting, where the shooter used highly lethal "bump stocks" which allowed semi-automatic AR-15s to effectively become fully automatic.

In class, we discussed how President Trump promised to ban bump stocks just a few weeks after the shooting, but nothing came of it. Coincidentally, the next day after our discussion, Donald Trump announced a comprehensive ban on "bump stocks" and has informed the NRA of his official position.

I hope this brings some peace to the families and victims of the Las Vegas Shooting, though it'll take a lot more to bring justice to the thousands of adults and children that have been afflicted by mass shootings and gun violence through the US.
