The Trump administration has announced that it plans to withdraw from the Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty of 1987. This treaty banned the United States and Russia from possessing any ground-launched ballistic and cruise missile systems with ranges between 500 and 5,500 kilometers (300 to 3,400 miles). The treaty has served U.S. and European security well for three decades. Trump said the reason for this are that Russia has been building systems that violate INF and is unwilling to give up, and that leaving the treaty can help US improve the military balance against China.
However, leaving the INF is basically tearing down the Cold War arms control architecture, and it would bring the world to the nuclear brink. Is Trump gradually destroying the liberal international order that the US was largely responsible for constructing post-WW2? Some critics said that Giving up on an arms control treaty that has been largely successful for European security because it does not address new developments in another part of the world just creates a new problem without fixing any of the others. So is this a good decision or a mistake?
