About this Blog
During the semester, I shall post course material and students will comment on it. Students are also free to comment on any aspect of American politics, either current or historical. There are only two major limitations: no coarse language, and no derogatory comments about people at the Claremont Colleges. This blog is on the open Internet, so post nothing that you would not want a potential employer to see. Syllabus: http://gov20h.blogspot.com/2023/08/draft-introduction-to-american-politics.html

The sustaining trade war with China
China Once Looked Tough on Trade. Now Its Options Are Dwindling.
Trump has made his biggest move in trade war with China, announcing 10 percent tariffs starting in a week on $200 billion a year of Chinese goods. In prior tariffs that trump has imposed, China matched them back all. However, China could only match back $60 billion this time, since United States imports nearly four times as much from China as it exports.
I wonder after this biggest move, will trump choose to upgrade the trade war to a higher level of national confrontation, or to start negotiations after the trade war has reached the highest level?
Would Trump's attack on Trade with China increase his weak approval ratings and help him gain more influence in congressional elections in November? How and when would this sustaining trade war end?
