About this Blog

During the semester, I shall post course material and students will comment on it. Students are also free to comment on any aspect of American politics, either current or historical. There are only two major limitations: no coarse language, and no derogatory comments about people at the Claremont Colleges. This blog is on the open Internet, so post nothing that you would not want a potential employer to see. Syllabus: http://gov20h.blogspot.com/2023/08/draft-introduction-to-american-politics.html

Ryan: Democrats' election wins put more pressure on GOP to pass tax overhaul

Democrats scored sizeable victories in gubernatorial races in Virginia and New Jersey, and also grabbed state legislature seats — election outcomes that were read by many as a repudiation of President Donald Trump.

“It doesn’t change my reading of the current moment, it just emphasizes my reading of the current moment, which is we have a promise to keep and we’ve got to get on with keeping our promise,” Ryan said at an event hosted by the Washington Examiner.

Legislation moving through the House would largely cut personal and business tax rates, which Ryan expects will boost U.S. economic growth while also improving Republicans’ political fortunes.
