About this Blog

During the semester, I shall post course material and students will comment on it. Students are also free to comment on any aspect of American politics, either current or historical. There are only two major limitations: no coarse language, and no derogatory comments about people at the Claremont Colleges. This blog is on the open Internet, so post nothing that you would not want a potential employer to see. Syllabus: http://gov20h.blogspot.com/2023/08/draft-introduction-to-american-politics.html

"Coastal Citadels"

The illustration at the beginning of this article ties in to what we were talking about in class today. The image is attached if the WSJ blocks you out.

Apparently Democrats have been obliterated at the state level. See video here. Dems. now have full control over just 6 states, and 1/3 of all House seats held by Democrats will come from just California, New York and Massachusetts. This probably helped Trump win the electoral college.

Also, "Exit polls show that 43% of voters in union households went for Trump, just 8 percentage points behind Mrs. Clinton." In the long run, I thought that Republicans would be hurt by shifting demographic trends, but now I'm wondering if increasing white working-class support for Republicans might help offset losses due to minorities.
