About this Blog

During the semester, I shall post course material and students will comment on it. Students are also free to comment on any aspect of American politics, either current or historical. There are only two major limitations: no coarse language, and no derogatory comments about people at the Claremont Colleges. This blog is on the open Internet, so post nothing that you would not want a potential employer to see. Syllabus: http://gov20h.blogspot.com/2023/08/draft-introduction-to-american-politics.html

Clinton's silence on the Dakota Access Pipeline just lost her an electoral vote

Dem elector says he won't vote for Clinton

A Democratic elector in the state of Washington refuses to vote for Clinton even if she carries the state of Washington--where it's guaranteed she will.

The elector, member of the state's Puyallup Tribe, says that he will not vote for her because of her lack of support for Native Americans and states "She doesn't care about my land or my air or my fire or my water".

The Dakota Access Pipeline has become a large political issue and Clinton's silence on it appears to be more deafening than ever. Although she did release her "position" on the pipeline, the statement is meaningless and takes a position of neutrality on the pipeline. Many prominent Democrats have come out against the pipeline in support for pre-existing Native American treaties violated by the pipeline.

The question of the faithless elector has come up frequently, especially in this presidential election since both candidates are polarizing within their parties.

What do you think about the pipeline?
