About this Blog

During the semester, I shall post course material and students will comment on it. Students are also free to comment on any aspect of American politics, either current or historical. There are only two major limitations: no coarse language, and no derogatory comments about people at the Claremont Colleges. This blog is on the open Internet, so post nothing that you would not want a potential employer to see. Syllabus: http://gov20h.blogspot.com/2023/08/draft-introduction-to-american-politics.html

How Evan McMullin Could Win Utah And The Presidency

The following link is an article from statistician Nate Silver's site Five Thirty Eight detailing how Evan McMullin could capitalize on Trump's inability to make strides in Utah and potentially deadlock the electoral college, thus sending the election to the House. Although Silver's Now-Cast model only gives McMullin a 9.7% chance of winning the state, the fact that his candidacy as an independent is gaining any traction at all speaks to the general discontent of many conservatives, especially Mormons, with Trump.

Five Thirty Eight also has interactive and frequently updated electoral maps which may be useful for the most recently assigned first essay topic.
