About this Blog

During the semester, I shall post course material and students will comment on it. Students are also free to comment on any aspect of American politics, either current or historical. There are only two major limitations: no coarse language, and no derogatory comments about people at the Claremont Colleges. This blog is on the open Internet, so post nothing that you would not want a potential employer to see. Syllabus: http://gov20h.blogspot.com/2023/08/draft-introduction-to-american-politics.html

Two Trump-like candidates who actually won.

The conventional wisdom goes that Trump simply cannot win the Republican nomination due to his shallow policy positions and constant insults. Disturbingly, two Trump-like figures have won high elected office before.

Silvio Berlusconi, media mogul and the longest-serving prime minister in post-WWII Italian history, used many tactics now employed by Trump.

Matt Bevin, a wealthy businessman who has never held elected office and has been known to feud with local reporters, is now the next governor of Kentucky.
