About this Blog

During the semester, I shall post course material and students will comment on it. Students are also free to comment on any aspect of American politics, either current or historical. There are only two major limitations: no coarse language, and no derogatory comments about people at the Claremont Colleges. This blog is on the open Internet, so post nothing that you would not want a potential employer to see. Syllabus: http://gov20h.blogspot.com/2023/08/draft-introduction-to-american-politics.html

As Campaign Ad Season Looms...A Look Back

"The Living Room Candidate" is a website with archives of television ads from presidential races all the way back to 1952. The site features not only countless ads from 20th and 21st century campaigns, but also provides electoral maps to show who ended up winning the overall election. The site includes famous ads like Johnson's "Daisy" ad in '64, and the Swift Boat Veterans ads of 2004 attacking Kerry's war record. The older ads from the Eisenhower campaigns provide a fun contrast with today's highly polished and often negative productions. Check it out below!
