Julia Pierson, director of the Secret Service, resigned earlier today after a series of embarrassing events beginning last month. We discussed the most recent incident today in class about an armed intruder entering the East Room on Sept. 19. The other focus of controversy dealt with an armed private bodyguard riding in an elevator alone at the Center for Disease Control with the president last month. The bodyguard's weapon was discovered after he had acted unprofessionally and taken multiple pictures of the president.
Ms. Pierson faced a series of criticism and calls for her resignation from both parties early Wednesday morning after last night's congressional hearing. According to a reporter from Bloomberg News, Ms. Pierson admitted to resigning because "Congress has lost confidence in my ability to run this agency."
Officials have made it clear that Ms. Pierson's withdrawal from the agency is no quick fix. Additional changes are necessary and the large possibility of more resignations has been hinted.
