About this Blog

During the semester, I shall post course material and students will comment on it. Students are also free to comment on any aspect of American politics, either current or historical. There are only two major limitations: no coarse language, and no derogatory comments about people at the Claremont Colleges. This blog is on the open Internet, so post nothing that you would not want a potential employer to see. Syllabus: http://gov20h.blogspot.com/2023/08/draft-introduction-to-american-politics.html

Post Office No More?

I just read this article about the proposed future of the post office. I was curious, what do you guys think about the post office? Is it still an important part of society or can email replace "snail mail" for good? Should the government continue to run a failing business or should we rely on companies like FedEx or UPS for all of the mail?

I was actually reading about this issue a couple weeks ago in the NYT and was wondering the same thing. I do think that email can replace "snail mail" and that other companies can take over what US Postal Service does. However, to lay off 560,000 government employees does not seem feasible. Some of the solutions in the article, like not having mail on saturdays or not as long hours, might make more sense in the long run.
